What can I read with COGNIV?
PDFs and supported DRM-free, reflowable EPUBs. Fixed-layout EPUB and DOCX viewing are not available in this preview. Complex PDF layouts may need the original page view rather than extracted Flow text.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
COGNIV is free and open source under AGPL-3.0-only. The desktop app does not require an account and includes no analytics SDK.
What stays on my computer?
The desktop reading workspace uses local documents. You choose temporary reading or retention of your place, notes, and history. Saved reading records use encrypted local storage. Temporary reading is not a zero-trace guarantee: deliberate exports, clipboard contents, and Windows-managed data have separate lifecycles. This homepage is hosted online by Cloudflare.
Does it include AI?
An optional local assistant is available in the desktop preview. It starts disabled and includes no model or runtime. You must select compatible offline files separately, and explicitly choose the excerpt to share with the local model. Answers can be wrong; check the source.
Can I install it today?
The current version is 0.5.1-preview.2, an unsigned engineering preview. A public installer has not yet been approved or linked here. When a reviewed release is available, the download area will offer Windows Setup and Portable options.
